Kurdistan Region Rejects Iran Regime's Request to Close Saudi Consulate in Erbil

NCRI - Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) rejected the request by an Iran regime's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) commander to close Saudi Consulate in Erbil calling the request a meddling in the internal affairs of the KRG.
According to Saudi official news agency (SPA), the KRG in a statement on Monday, January 16, announce that the decision to open embassies and consulate of other countries including Saudi Arabia in Erbil is adopted in the framework of the Kurdistan region as well Iraq’s laws and no one is allowed to interfere in the internal affairs of the region.
The KRG statement points out that it is not the first time a commander of Iran regime’s IRGC expressed statements about the internal affairs of the Iraq’s Kurdistan region and the KRG considers the statements blatant and unjustified interference in the internal affairs of the Kurdistan region and strongly opposes them.
The KRG expressed hope that Iran regime in the future refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of Kurdistan and prevent such irresponsible statements by some IRGC commanders.
It should be noted that the Saudi Arabia’s consul general, Abdol-Monam Abdolrahman, yesterday entered Erbil to open Saudi consulate in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Sources in the Kurdistan region said the opening of Saudi consulate in Erbil has taken place with agreement of Massoud Barzani, president of Kurdistan region, and Nechervan Barzani, prime minister of the region.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s consul general had said that Riyadh acts in line with increasing trade with KRG and will not be indifferent to the Kurdistan region.
In this regard, Thamer Sabhan, former Saudi ambassador in Baghdad, travelled to Iraqi Kurdistan on February 2nd this year to meet and talk with the Kurdistan region officials.
