Choice in Iran Election Is Between Plague and Cholera

“The two leading contenders for the forthcoming presidential elections in Iran offer a choice between a charlatan and an executioner, or a choice between plague and cholera.” This was the view expressed today by Struan Stevenson, a former European lawmaker. He says that the election on 19th May will feature current President Hassan Rouhani, who tricked the west into believing he is a moderate, while during his 4 years in power more than 3,000 people have been hanged. The other main contender is Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, a key member of the so-called ‘Death Commission’ who in 1988 ordered the execution of over 30,000 political prisoners.
“The Iranian election is a sham and a scandal,” claimed Mr. Stevenson. “Over one thousand people registered as potential candidates, only to be disqualified by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Those disqualified from standing even included former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who although considered a fanatical hardliner by the West, was clearly thought to be too soft to face the new muscular approach from the US administration. Khamenei might want to push his preferred candidate Ebrahim Raisi over the winning line in May. The 56 year-old judge and cleric, who wears a black turban signifying his direct descendency from the Prophet Mohammed, could be a suitable replacement for Rouhani. Raisi’s blood-soaked legacy of ordering the annihilation of 30,000 political opponents of the regime in 1988, including people who had already served sentences and been released from prison and even pregnant women and teenagers, obviously provides him with strong credentials in the eyes of the despotic Supreme Leader.”

Stevenson, who during his 15 years as a member of the European Parliament led the Friends of a Free Iran Intergroup and was President of the Delegation for Relations with Iraq, continued: “The crimes and atrocities committed by this fascist regime over the past 38 years are horrific. In particular its determined effort to wipe out the main democratic opposition Peoples Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI) and anyone who questions its repressive grip on power. This evil regime has brought nothing but death, destruction, poverty, unemployment and corruption to Iran, stealing billions of the Iranian people's wealth for exporting terrorism and sponsoring every conflict in the Middle East, particularly through its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The regime funds and supplies Bashar al-Assad in Syria, the Houthi rebels in Yemen, the brutal Shi’ia militias in Iraq and the terrorist Hezbollah in Lebanon. But the regime is now terrified that its days are numbered. The departure of Obama and his policy of appeasement and the arrival of President Trump and his strong criticism of the mullahs as the world’s main sponsors of terror, have struck fear into the hearts of the turbaned tyrants in Tehran.

“The Iranian regime has spread terror and sectarian conflict across the Middle East, wrecked the Iranian economy, impoverished its people and responded to criticism with medieval violence and brutality. The visible opulence and corruption of the millionaire mullahs who have drained the country’s resources and oppressed the Iranian population, while exporting terror across the zone, has turned Iran into a ticking timebomb, ready to explode at the slightest spark. The people of Iran have had enough of this theocratic fascist regime. They are horrified by the way the mullahs have turned this once proud and civilised nation into a pariah state, sponsoring and exporting terror across the Middle East.”

Stevenson concluded by stating: “I believe that the fraudulent election on 19th May could well provide the spark that will ignite the Iranian powderkeg. But this time, when the Iranian people take to the streets in protest, the West must support them.”

Struan Stevenson, President of the European Iraqi Freedom Association (EIFA), was a Member of the European Parliament representing Scotland (1999-2014). He was President of the Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Iraq (2009- 2014) and Chair of Friends of a Free Iran Intergroup (Caucus) from 2004-2014.
